Vinyl Record Protection Guide: Inner Sleeves, Outer Sleeves and Storage

Vinyl records need support against dust, abrasion, pressure and poor handling. The most useful protection depends on whether you are replacing an inner sleeve, protecting the outer jacket, separating records on a shelf or moving records through the post.

Inner sleeves and outer sleeves do different jobs

An inner sleeve sits directly around the record. Its main purpose is to reduce contact with dust and rough paper surfaces. An outer sleeve fits around the record jacket and helps protect printed artwork from rubbing, fingerprints and shelf wear. Many collections benefit from using both.

Choosing an inner sleeve

Check the record diameter first. Twelve-inch LPs and seven-inch singles require different sleeves. Anti-static and polylined inner sleeves are useful when reducing surface contact is a priority. Paper sleeves can add stiffness and are available with different corner and centre-hole designs. Do not force a record into an undersized sleeve.

Choosing an outer sleeve or bag

Outer sleeves are available in different plastics, thicknesses and closure styles. A snug sleeve reduces excess movement, while a resealable bag helps limit dust entry. Allow extra space for gatefold, double or unusually thick jackets. A sleeve that is too tight can compress corners or make the jacket difficult to remove.

Rigid protectors and display protection

A rigid record protector adds more resistance to bending and impact than a flexible sleeve. Measure the complete jacket thickness, including inserts and existing sleeves, before choosing a snug or standard fit. Rigid protectors are useful for higher-value records, display copies and items handled frequently.

Dividers and storage boxes

Dividers make larger collections easier to organise by artist, label, genre or catalogue number. Choose a divider height that remains visible above the stored jackets without placing pressure on neighbouring records. Record storage boxes should support records vertically and limit sideways movement without packing them tightly.

Seven-inch and 45 RPM records

Seven-inch records need correctly sized sleeves, bags, dividers and boxes. Some large-centre-hole records also require a 45 RPM adapter for compatible turntables. Confirm the record format and player spindle before selecting an adapter.

Handling and storage

• Store records upright rather than in heavy horizontal stacks.
• Handle the disc by its edges and labelled centre.
• Keep records away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and damp conditions.
• Replace dirty or damaged sleeves rather than returning a clean record to them.
• Check dimensions carefully when a jacket is oversized, gatefold or already inside another protector.
