Collector Storage Basics: Light, Heat, Humidity and Handling

A holder or album is only one part of protecting a collection. Light, temperature, moisture, handling and storage position can all affect how an item ages.

Keep conditions stable

Rapid changes in temperature and humidity can be harder on many materials than a stable indoor environment. Avoid garages, sheds, roof spaces, damp basements and other locations with strong seasonal or daily swings where possible.

Limit unnecessary light exposure

Sunlight and strong artificial light can contribute to fading and material changes. Display items away from direct sunlight and rotate sensitive items rather than leaving them under intense light continuously. A product described as UV resistant can reduce exposure but should not be treated as a guarantee against all fading.

Protect against moisture

Store collections away from leaks, condensation, external walls prone to dampness and floors that may flood. Do not seal an item while it is damp. Where climate conditions justify it, monitor the storage area rather than guessing.

Handle deliberately

• Use clean, dry hands and a clear work surface.
• Support flexible or fragile objects instead of lifting them by an edge.
• Avoid food, drinks, smoke and household chemicals near the collection.
• Use clean tools intended for the task.
• Do not force an item into a holder.

Choose sensible storage positions

Heavy stacking can transfer pressure to the items below. Overfilled albums can strain rings, pages and covers. Boxes should be supported, labelled and stored where they can be retrieved without being dropped or dragged.

Inspect periodically

Check for changes in odour, colour, surface condition, moisture, pests, warping or packaging failure. Early detection makes it easier to move the collection and investigate the cause.
