Stamp Storage Guide: Albums, Stockbooks, Mounts and Interleaves

Stamp collectors use several storage systems, and each supports a different balance of organisation, visibility, flexibility and long-term care.

Choose by how you collect: a stockbook offers ready-made strips, a loose-leaf binder lets you rearrange compatible pocket pages, and an illustrated album follows a country or period layout.

Before choosing a loose-leaf system, read our VARIO binder and page compatibility guide. Check the exact contents: a binder does not automatically include pages or a slipcase.

Albums and printed pages

Printed albums organise stamps according to a defined catalogue or country structure. Before adding pages, confirm the album format, page size and binding or hole pattern. Systems that look similar are not necessarily interchangeable.

Stockbooks

Stockbooks use horizontal strips to hold stamps without a permanently assigned space. Consider the number of pages, strip material, page colour, interleaving and binding quality. Avoid overfilling strips or allowing stamps to overlap.

Mounts and hinges

Mounts provide a pocket or enclosure for a stamp and are available in different heights and formats. Match the mount to the stamp’s dimensions and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Hinges are a different mounting method and may not be suitable for every collector or item.

Interleaves

Interleaving can help separate facing pages and reduce contact. Check whether interleaves are supplied with the album, available separately or compatible with the specific binding system.

Measure before selecting

Allow for perforations and margins when measuring a stamp or block. For mounts, use the usable internal area specified by the manufacturer. Do not trim or force a storage product around a valuable item without understanding the system.

Storage environment and handling

Keep stamp collections dry, stable and away from direct sunlight. Handle stamps with clean, appropriate tools and support album pages when turning them. Inspect periodically for moisture, adhesion, discolouration or distortion.
